Take Action

On January 12, 2009, MGMbill.org resubmitted the Male Genital Mutilation Bill proposal to every member of the 111th Congress for consideration. Our state offices also submitted state level MGM Bill proposals to every member of 13 U.S. state legislatures. The goal of this effort is to encourage lawmakers to step forward and sponsor one or more of these bills.

If you support the MGM Bill proposals on this site, you can help improve their chances of becoming law by taking these five steps:

Sign The Ashley Montagu Resolution and Petition, which calls for an end to genital mutilation of children worldwide. It's a quick and easy way to voice your support for genital integrity.

Write your local House and Senate congressional members along with President Obama and ask them to sponsor the MGM Bill proposal (feel free to use or modify one of our sample letters to help get you started). Be sure to enclose a printed copy of the MGM Bill proposal with each letter for reference (or copy and paste the bill text if you are writing via email).

Write similar letters of support to your local state legislators and governor, (again, feel free to use our sample letters, and enclose a printed copy or link to your state's MGM Bill proposal with each letter). California residents are encouraged to use our free fax blast service in place of this step.

Scan and forward the reply letters from your elected leaders to us so we can post them to the Government Responses page along with a response of our own (if you don't have access to a scanner, contact us to send a copy to our postal mailing address). For government response letters in email format, just forward the entire message to comments@mgmbill.org as an attachment, or by using the "Forward" button in your email program. It is important that we hold our government leaders publicly accountable for the actions they take while in office, and you can help do that by letting the world know what your elected officials are telling you.

If you want to have your state represented in the next annual MGM Bill proposal submission (scheduled for January, 2010), consider becoming a temporary MGMbill.org state office.

Together, we can bring the practice of male genital mutilation to an end in this country.
