The
American Congress of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is the
leading U.S. medical association for women's health
practitioners. Although OB/GYNs specialize in
health care for women, they also perform
more than 70% of all infant male circumcisions in the U.S., offering the
surgery as an "added service" to new
parents.
ACOG
already
acknowledges that infant male circumcision is
medically unnecessary, but
despite
public criticism
their
existing policy
still allows members to perform male
circumcisions for any reason. Members are discouraged from
performing
female circumcisions, however.
ACOG refuses
to allow intactivist organizations to exhibit at their
Annual Clinical
Meetings, thus depriving attending members from
learning about the damaging effects of male
circumcision. At best, this "keep out" policy is medical
negligence. At worst, it is a deliberate attempt to
perpetuate the lucrative and culturally ingrained
practice of infant male circumcision by withholding
crucial medical information from its membership.
